Echoes Of My Life // Epilogue (November)

“Kayla, I’m home,” Taylor shouted out, bursting into his apartment noisily, dropping his keys and bag onto the table beside the front door. She poked her head into the hallway, smiling widely.

“Why are you so late? I’ve been waiting for you,” she said, stepping out and wiping her hands on her jeans, leaving wet marks on the light denim.

“Doing dishes?” he asked.

“Someone has to clean up after you,” she grinned, moving to her tiptoes so she could kiss him fully on the mouth. Taylor stepped into the kitchen to see that it was still set from the dinner he immediately inferred she’d made for him hours before.

“I’m sorry I’m so late,” he whispered as he pulled her close, saying the words directly into her ear. She lightly pushed him away and leaned against the counter.

“I was at work today in the Jersey hell I’ve been demoted to. Everyone was annoying me, asking for favors. All I could think about was running out to my car and speeding all the way home just so I could see you. I’ve never gotten a ticket in my life, and I just risked that for you,” she stood there looking at him seriously for a moment before continuing, “So, I got out early and decided to surprise you with dinner. You know, to make sure the stove actually works for something other than storing your cookie sheets.”

“I love you,” he said, placing a kiss to her temple.

“I love you, too,” she replied, heading for the fridge to retrieve their dinner from within, “You had a long day. Do you want some tea or something?” He pushed the hair back form her face so he could see her while she readied two plates for the microwave.

“Tea sounds perfect,” he answered. And there, in his tiny kitchen, which after several months was still the only room fully unpacked, he knew that he was finally home.

The End
